Dog ID law in the UK

Dog identification law in the United Kingdom

In the UK, the Control of Dogs Order 1992 mandates that any dog in a public place must wear a collar with the owner's details engraved or written on it, or engraved on a dog identity tag.

The details required are the owner's name and address (including postcode). A house number and postcode can be sufficient for address details which is useful for smaller ID tags. The owner's telephone is optional but highly advisable.

Some dog owners choose to include their dog's name on the identity tag. Some dog owners choose not to do this because of dog thefts, however the choice is up to the owner.

If your dog is microchipped it is recommended to include this wording on the identity tag.
